We are Systematix and we are currently looking for a Senior Database Administrator for our client.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: Our client is seeking a Senior Database Administrator to support enterprise-scale cloud and data modernization initiatives within a large public sector environment. The role focuses on database architecture, administration, optimization, migration, security, and operational support across mission-critical platforms and cloud-based data services.
The successful candidate will act as a senior technical resource responsible for database design, performance tuning, capacity planning, backup and recovery, high availability, disaster recovery, and cloud database operations. The role supports structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data solutions across Azure-based platforms while ensuring compliance with public sector governance and security requirements.
ABOUT THE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design and develop data pipelines from source systems to end-user solutions
Optimize and maintain enterprise data pipelines and database environments
Create logical and physical database designs for OLTP, analytical, and cloud workloads
Administer database management systems including installation, migration, upgrades, backup, recovery, and performance tuning
Support Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines
Manage Azure Storage, Azure Data Lake, Data Warehouse, Data Lakehouse, Databricks, and Azure Data Factory environments
Perform capacity planning, growth forecasting, lifecycle management, and operational optimization
Design and support High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies
Support structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data ingestion and provisioning
Implement DataOps monitoring, alerting, automation, and operational tuning practices
Research and implement cybersecurity vulnerability remediation activities
Support incident, change, and configuration management processes
Collaborate with infrastructure, security, application, and data teams
Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and operational guidance
Support knowledge transfer, documentation, and operational readiness activities
REQUIREMENTS: Must-have:
7–10+ years of Database Administration experience supporting enterprise-scale database systems
Proven expertise administering Azure PaaS and IaaS database platforms
Experience with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines
Experience with Azure Storage, Azure Data Lake, Databricks Lakehouse, and Azure Data Factory
Strong database design expertise including logical and physical data modeling
Experience with schema optimization, normalization, denormalization, and partitioning strategies
Advanced database performance tuning and troubleshooting
Expertise in query optimization, indexing strategies, Query Store analysis, wait statistics review, IO analysis, and TempDB optimization
Experience implementing Azure authentication, Azure AD integration, RBAC, encryption, TDE, and key management
Experience supporting HA/DR environments and backup/recovery strategies
Strong experience with incident, change, and configuration management
Knowledge of PHIPA compliance, audit standards, and data classification requirements
Strong analytical, communication, troubleshooting, and stakeholder management skills
Nice-to-have:
Experience with distributed database systems and NoSQL platforms
Experience with middleware and gateways
Experience with Data Warehouse and Data Mart solutions
Experience with Oracle technologies, Data Guard, WebLogic, OEM Grid Control, and eBusiness Suite
Knowledge of Information Management principles and practices
Experience with CASE tools
Experience with AWS, Azure, and GCP cloud data services
Public sector and Ontario Public Service experience
Experience supporting Data Lakehouse architectures and emerging cloud-native technologies
KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER:
Provide ongoing knowledge transfer to project teams and operational support staff
Document database administration, architecture, optimization, and operational procedures
Support transition planning and operational sustainability activities
ABOUT THE ROLE: Location: Onsite – 222 Jarvis St., Toronto, Ontario OR 49 Place d'Armes, Kingston, Ontario Duration: June 15, 2026 – October 5, 2027 Work Hours: 7.25 hours/day, Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Security Clearance: CRJMC
PAY DISCLOSURE: The average hourly pay range for this field is as follows:
Junior: $72–$80/hr
Intermediate: $80–$85/hr
Senior: $85–$88.88/hr
Compensation is commensurate with these standards; exceptions may apply based on experience, Azure cloud expertise, database architecture experience, DataOps expertise, certifications, and market conditions.
