UNIX MIDRANGE SUPPORT SPECIALIST

We’re currently seeking a skilled and experienced UNIX MIDRANGE SUPPORT SPECIALIST to support our client, a large power utility, in maintaining and optimizing UNIX-based midrange systems across critical enterprise operations. This role involves performing system administration, troubleshooting incidents, documenting processes, and collaborating with technical and business teams to ensure high availability and performance of key IT infrastructure. The ideal candidate brings extensive expertise in UNIX platforms, scripting, and enterprise support.

Location & Work Hours
Location: Remote work arrangement with periodic onsite visits to Regina, Saskatchewan, with a 4-week advance notice.
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM CST.
Start Date: July 1, 2025.
End Date: June 30, 2028.
Availability: Occasional after-hours support and overtime may be required.
Security Clearance: Not specified, but candidates must have no disqualifying criminal history.
Requirements
Mandatory Education & Experience

  • Degree in computer science, information technology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Formal training or certifications in UNIX system administration or a related field.

Strong experience with:

  • UNIX system administration (AIX, Solaris, Linux)
  • Midrange hardware platforms
  • Scripting languages such as Bash or Perl
  • Developing and maintaining system configurations and procedural documentation

 

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with operational support in large enterprise environments.
  • Availability for on-call rotation and after-hours support as required.
     

Desired Certifications

  • UNIX System Administration certifications (e.g., Red Hat Certified Engineer, Solaris Certified System Administrator)
  • ITIL Foundation Certification
     

Preferred Experience

  • Supporting mission-critical applications in a large power utility or regulated environment
  • Enterprise system performance monitoring and optimization
  • Working with cross-functional teams to align system capabilities with business needs
  • Experience developing secure, reliable, and compliant IT processes and documentation
  • Process automation and workflow improvements using scripting and related tools
     

Key Deliverables

  • System configuration and operational documentation
  • Incident reports and resolution tracking
  • Improved system performance and reliability metrics
  • Transitioned documentation and knowledge transfer for ongoing operations
     

About the Role

This is a three-year contract role starting June 1, 2025, with potential for extension. The position offers a remote work arrangement with periodic onsite visits to Regina, Saskatchewan, provided with a 4-week advance notice. The role demands hands-on technical expertise and the ability to support multiple mission-critical initiatives simultaneously.
