The world is evolving in response to the growing impacts of climate change, necessitating our constant adaptation. At Systematix, we recognize the global challenges posed by climate change and are committed to doing our part. We’re proud to announce that our Ottawa team is leading the way by implementing new initiatives aimed at decarbonizing our workplace and preparing our business for a more sustainable future.
As part of this effort, our Ottawa office has joined the Net-Zero Challenge, a Government of Canada initiative. Through this commitment, the team aims to achieve net-zero emissions for all Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse gases by 2045.
What Does This Mean?
- Scope 1 emissions refer to direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from activities that the company directly owns or controls. This includes, for example, fuel combustion in boilers, or company-owned vehicles, as well as emissions from chemical processes or gas leaks. Notably, our Ottawa office already produces no Scope 1 emissions.
- Scope 2 emissions refer to indirect emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity, heating, and cooling. The Ottawa team plans to reduce these by adopting energy-efficient electronics and lighting, and by optimizing how energy is used in the office.
- Scope 3 emissions are indirect emissions that occur throughout an organization’s value chain, often outside its direct control. For Systematix, this includes categories such as:
- Purchased goods and services
- Business travel
- Employee commuting
- Waste generated in operations
To reduce these, the Ottawa team will review internal processes and procurement strategies, prioritize local and low-carbon suppliers, promote alternative commuting options, and identify ways to reduce everyday waste. Progress will be monitored through monthly carbon emissions tracking and annual reduction targets.
Planning for the Future
In addition to emissions reductions, our Ottawa team is integrating climate scenario planning into its Risk Management Plan and overall business strategy. This includes addressing the energy demands of complex IT projects and working with clients and partners to implement more sustainable solutions whenever possible.
This commitment reflects our broader dedication to corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship. We’re proud of our Ottawa team for taking meaningful steps toward a net-zero future.
